" It was an easy decision to make and one that none of us want to have to discuss again this year. Considering the hiring base in the coming quarters, overall it is the right thing to do.”
Brian Wang said the employees who were being laid off will receive emails starting on Wednesday.
In January this year, Google parent company Alphabet announced that it would lay off 12,000 people, accounting for about 6% of the total number of full-time employees. The layoffs span all parts of the company, including Google's recruiting team. Google has been cutting costs since last year, and Alphabet reported second-quarter revenue growth of 7%, better than analysts expected.
Brian Wang also said employees affected by the latest layoffs will retain access to their offices this week and to company systems longer. Employees had previously criticized the company for abruptly cutting ties with people who lost their jobs in January.
Google spokesperson Courtenay Mencini confirmed the layoffs in an email.
“We continue to invest in top engineering and technical talent while intentionally slowing the pace of overall hiring. Consistent with this, the volume of job requests our recruiters are receiving has declined. In order to continue to advance our important work and ensure we operate efficiently, we have made the difficult decision to reduce the size of our recruiting team,” he wrote.
