The Google Gemini app for iOS and iPadOS now includes lock screen widgets that make it easier and faster to access the AI assistant's various features. The latest update to the app adds a total of six widgets, each of which allows you to directly enter a specific Gemini function.
Google seems to be making a conscious effort to lure iPhone and iPad users away from Siri, or at least have users use Gemini instead of OpenAI's ChatGPT when they want to interact with large language models. Google also recently advertised Gemini on Apple-focused tech podcasts.
Apple has reportedly been slow to develop a smarter, more powerful Siri that cannot compete with today's leading artificial intelligence platforms. Over the weekend, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported that a truly fully upgraded Siri may still be several years away. Therefore, it is particularly important for Google to vigorously promote Gemini during this period. Apple itself may also offer Gemini as another source of Apple Intelligence in the coming months.
As for Widgets, here are the functions of each Widget introduced by Google:
Input tip: Having trouble? Type anything now.
Live Chat: Discuss or brainstorm out loud with Gemini.
Open microphone: Quickly open your microphone to set reminders, create calendar events, and more.
Use your camera: Take pictures of what's in front of you and ask your Gemini questions.
Share an image: Select an image to get more information, create new art, or start a chat.
Share files: Use files to share the information or inspiration behind a question.
Google released a standalone Gemini app for iOS back in November, separating it from the main Google Search app.
