According to Nikkei Asia, Tesla's strong sales performance in the Japanese market has become a rare bright spot for the company. Currently, consumers in other markets such as Europe and the United States are boycotting Tesla because they are dissatisfied with Elon Musk.

Tesla does not disclose its sales data in detail by region, but its sales in the Japanese market can be estimated using data from the Japan Automobile Importers Association. The association compiles sales data by car brand and includes Tesla in the "other brands" category.

In the "Other Brands" category, the majority of sales came from Tesla. In the first quarter of this year, sales of "other brands" increased by 56% year-on-year to 2,120 vehicles. In March alone, sales of "other brands" soared 89% to 1,249 vehicles, setting a new monthly high. But outside of Japan, Tesla's sales are declining in key markets. According to data from research company MarkLines, Tesla's total sales in China in January and February this year fell by about 30% year-on-year, sales in the United States also fell by about 10%, and sales in Europe fell by about 40%.

So, why does Tesla perform so well in Japan? One reason is the lack of attractive alternatives from local Japanese brands. Currently, Japanese brands have launched only 8 electric models. Nissan took the lead in entering the electric vehicle market with the Leaf brand, but sales of this model fell by 32% in the first quarter of this year, with only 1,133 units sold. Sales of Toyota's bZ4X were even bleaker, with only 85 units sold, a year-on-year drop of 76%. The total sales of electric vehicles by Japanese car companies was 2,063 units, which was less than Tesla’s estimated sales.

Since the Leaf and bZ4X models have not been revised since 2017 and 2022, the competitiveness of Japanese electric vehicles is declining. More and more Japanese consumers are choosing imported models, which currently account for about 75% of total electric vehicle sales in Japan. Tesla and BYD together account for about 30% of the Japanese electric vehicle market.
