According to reports,Tencent Holdings is exploring the acquisition of South Korean game developer Nexon for US$15 billion (approximately 107.9 billion yuan).Tencent has contacted relatives of late Nexon founder Kim Jung-ju to discuss acquisition-related matters, people familiar with the matter said.
Kim Jung-ju's family holds a 44.4% stake in Nexon through its holding company NXC Corp, while Kim's family holds about 67.6% of NXC.
Currently, the Kim family is communicating with advisors and evaluating various options, but has not yet made clear its final attitude towards the sale of Nexon shares.
Nexon was founded in South Korea in 1994 and listed in Japan in 2011. It was one of the largest technology-related initial public offerings at the time.
Nexon's main works include "Rocky", "Rocky Heroes", "Dungeon Fighter (DNF)", "Bubble Hall", "Bubble Fighter", "Kart Runner", "Sky Wing Chain", "God's Domain", "MapleStory", "Counter-Strike Online" and "Counter-Strike Online 2".
Tencent and Nexon have a long history of cooperation. The national server of "Dungeon and Fighter" is operated by Tencent as an agent. This is also an evergreen game of Tencent.
