Microsoft has laid off a total of 15,000 employees this year. This massive layoff triggered widespread criticism, and some game fans even launched a boycott of Xbox. The layoff of so many employees in just a few months has raised concerns in the industry about the health of its operations.
Some analysts pointed out that the main purpose of this technology and gaming giant's move is to invest more resources in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). However, even with clear goals, executing such large-scale layoffs is no easy task. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella recently publicly expressed his guilt over the decision to lay off employees.
Satya Nadella admitted in an official blog post that the layoffs weighed heavily on him: "First, I want to talk about something that has been weighing heavily on my mind and something I know many of you are thinking about: the recent layoffs. These decisions are among the hardest we have ever had to make."
He called the laid-off employees "our colleagues, teammates, friends" and "people with whom we have worked and shared countless moments." Although he expressed regret over the layoff decision, Satya Nadella expressed his gratitude and best wishes to the departing employees.
Despite the downsizing, Satya Nadella stressed that Microsoft's headcount overall "has remained relatively stable." At the same time, he pointed out that "some talents in the industry and within Microsoft are receiving unprecedented recognition and rewards."
It is worth noting that shortly after the latest round of layoffs ended, Microsoft's market value was revealed to have exceeded the US$4 trillion mark. The strong performance confirms that the company is currently operating in good condition. Microsoft is continuing to increase its investment in the field of artificial intelligence, which is regarded as the company's core strategic direction in the future.
