Apple may plan to discontinue the production of silicone rubber and fluoroelastomer parts and replace them with next-generation materials that are more environmentally friendly. The move is expected to include accessories such as iPhone silicone cases with MagSafe, sports bands, SoloLoop and AirTagLoop. The rumor comes from Apple device collector and leaker "Kosutami," who has previously shared information about various prototypes including a braided USB-C cable for the iPhone 15, a MagSafe charger, and AirPods in different color options.

It is widely expected that after the launch of the iPhone 15 series, Apple will discontinue leather iPhone protective cases and replace them with accessories made of a material called "FineWoven". The discontinuation of silicone accessories is not expected to happen immediately, but rather through a more gradual transition, with existing models not getting new color options. For example, the SportBand may not launch in new color options after the release of Apple Watch Series 9, but will remain available until existing products are used up. Apple is expected to introduce new accessory designs, such as the "FineWoven" Apple Watch strap with a magnetic clasp, to replace the discontinued products.

Apple's discontinuation of all leather and silicone accessories is believed to be part of a broader move to transition to more environmentally friendly materials. While Apple's silicone accessories have a lower carbon footprint than their leather counterparts, they are not made from any recyclable materials. Materials such as fluoroelastomer are also difficult to recycle due to their heat-resistant properties and strong cross-linked structure.

"FineWoven" is expected to be the first next-generation material used by Apple, replacing leather in the short term, but may also replace some silicone accessories at some point. Other new, more environmentally friendly materials may also be used in other accessories in the future.
