Hyundai has unveiled a new wheel and tire design that features built-in snow chains that deploy and retract at the push of a button, promising an end to the tedious and freezing process of winding and removing traditional snow chains.
There are six bangs on each tire, in line with the six spokes of the wheel. Inside these bangs are thick wires like snow chains that extend back into the tread.
The wire sections are made from a compressed shape memory alloy that activates and expands when an electric current is passed through it. So when the road conditions start to become unstable or the use of snow chains is required by law, just press the button. The shape memory alloy then returns to its original shape, pushing the traveler above the tread. Now you're ready to go, all without soggy knees, muddy shoes or frozen fingers.
Hyundai says another benefit of snow chains is that they serve as a very visible reminder of when it's time for new tires. At this stage, this is just a conceptual idea.
Joon Mo Park, head of Hyundai Motor's advanced chassis development team, said: "This innovation reflects our commitment to transforming advanced technology into practical solutions that benefit customers. Indeed, since it relies on the redesign and electrical connection of the entire wheel assembly, both Hyundai and tire manufacturers need to do some fairly specific work to achieve it. However, for those who often need to drive on ice and snow, this technology will bring them great convenience."
Hyundai said it has applied for patents for the technology in South Korea and the United States, and Hyundai/Kia plans to "consider mass production of this tire following further technology development, durability and performance testing, and regulatory review."
Awesome idea, hope we get to see it soon!
