The sci-fi RPG project "Star Citizen" under development by Cloud Imperium Games recently set another milestone record on the fund tracker disclosed on its official website. After successfully crossing the US$900 million threshold in December 2025, this crowdfunding game, known as the most "money-burning" in history, has now climbed from US$900 million to more than US$1 billion in only about half a year.

According to official data from Cloud Imperium Games, Star Citizen’s “Funds Raised” column now shows ten-digit amounts for the first time and continues to grow after surpassing $1 billion.

"Star Citizen" was first announced in 2012 and was developed collaboratively by multiple studios. The overall project has been advancing for more than ten years. The game was initially crowdfunded via Kickstarter, gaining huge popularity and initial funding. Subsequently, the development team continued to raise funds by selling various in-game content (such as different types and levels of ships) to players to provide funding sources for long-term development. This model with continuous crowdfunding and paid virtual items as its core allowed "Star Citizen" to continuously accumulate funds over the years, and finally exceeded the billion-dollar mark.

For those unfamiliar with the project, Star Citizen plans to launch on PC with a full single-player campaign and an "MMO-like" role-playing experience with an ongoing universe setting. The single-player campaign part, "Squadron 42", is currently officially targeted for launch in 2026. The overall process is expected to be 30 to 40 hours, and will invite a large number of well-known actors including Gillian Anderson, Gary Oldman, and Henry Cavill to participate in the performance. However, considering that the project has been postponed many times in the past, the outside world is generally still paying attention to whether there will be new delays in the future.

Meanwhile, the multiplayer persistent universe portion of Star Citizen has been available to backers for years in alpha testing form. Players can experience the dual gameplay of walking and spaceships, and participate in a variety of tasks and activities, including peaceful transportation, exploration, trading, and various tactical operations with combat as the core. The development team maintains a quarterly update rhythm for this Alpha version, continues to add content and systems, and prepares for the future 1.0 official version. In recent updates, the game has added a third new galaxy, Nyx, and introduced VR support, large-scale server-level mission events, a new production and synthesis system and many other contents, further enriching the gameplay level.

The timeline on the official funding tracker shows a significant uptick in funding over the past week. Analysts believe that the recent Alpha 4.8 update of "Star Citizen" and the ongoing free play event are important factors driving this wave of rising funds. In addition, the community's high attention and discussion on the goal of "the total amount of funds raised is about to exceed one billion US dollars" is also believed to have further stimulated players' enthusiasm for support in a short period of time. Some players reported that approximately US$5 million in new funding was added in just 10 minutes in a certain period of time.

The development of "Star Citizen" is still in progress, and Cloud Imperium Games plans to continue to gradually improve the entire universe structure, system balance and technical stability through regular content updates and phased testing. After the total amount of crowdfunding exceeded one billion US dollars, this project has once again triggered discussions in the industry on issues such as "ultra-long development cycle" and "sustained crowdfunding operating model". Regardless of praise or doubt, "Star Citizen" has left a highly controversial but equally iconic mark in the history of the modern game industry with its unprecedented scale of financing and long development cycle.
