3GB GDDR7 video memory allows NVIDIA to increase the video memory capacity without increasing the number of video memory modules or the memory bit width. According to reports,A 3GB GDDR7 chip currently sells for between $60 and $70, while a standard 2GB GDDR7 chip costs about $20. The 3GB version has only 50% more capacity, but the price is about three times higher.
Based on a graphics card using 8 3GB GDDR7 modules, the cost of the video memory alone is $320 to $400 more than the 2GB solution, and the solution using 6 modules is also $240 to $300 more. Such a cost increase is enough to eat up the profit margin of the entire graphics card.
