[AI system enables 3D printing to achieve simultaneous quality inspection] On September 18th, researchers at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in the United States developed a system that uses cameras and artificial intelligence (AI) to detect 3D printing quality. During the printing process, the 3D printer can "inspect" the parts it manufactures layer by layer, and promptly detect minor defects such as broken wires and dimensional abnormalities. Researchers say this is expected to find problems before parts are printed, reducing follow-up inspection time and costs. The method can also be applied to other advanced manufacturing technologies, traditional subtractive manufacturing processes and experimental systems. Relevant research was published in the latest issue of "npj Advanced Manufacturing" magazine.
