[Former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib will continue to serve his sentence in the form of home confinement] September 18th, the Malaysian Pardon Bureau announced on September 18, local time, that it will allow former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib to serve the remainder of his sentence in the form of home confinement until August 2028. Najib served as Prime Minister of Malaysia from 2009 to 2018. After taking office, he established a sovereign investment fund called 1Malaysia Development Corporation (1MDB). In July 2020, the Kuala Lumpur High Court ruled that Najib was found guilty of seven counts of embezzlement of public funds and money laundering in the case of SRC International, a former subsidiary of 1MDB, and was sentenced to 12 years in prison and a fine of 210 million ringgit. Najib appealed to the Court of Appeal, but it was rejected in December 2021. In August 2022, the Federal Court of Malaysia finally upheld the original verdict, making Najib the first former prime minister of Malaysia to be imprisoned.
