[Japan’s US$5 trillion overseas assets may return to the country. The Japanese yen “super ship” is changing course] September 18th, Japanese investors currently hold approximately US$5 trillion in overseas assets, half of which is invested in the United States - Japanese investors hold approximately US$2.5 trillion in US stocks, bonds and other financial assets. As Japan's local interest rates continue to rise, the more attractive domestic income prospects are likely to induce some funds to return to the country. This shift may slow down or even reverse the stable cash flows that have long supported global asset prices in the United States and Europe. Rory Green, head of Asia and emerging markets at GlobalData TS Lombard, a London-based research institution, vividly pointed out: "The Japanese yen, the super ship, is changing course."
