[United Nations: Conflict intensifies in eastern Congo (DRC) and more than 70,000 people are displaced] September 19th, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reported on September 18th local time that armed conflicts in the North Kivu and South Kivu provinces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo continue to escalate, triggering large-scale displacement of people and increasing pressure on local livelihoods and communities. Data show that since mid-August, the intensification of conflicts between the two provinces has forced more than 70,000 people to flee to the Walikale region of North Kivu Province. The influx of large numbers of refugees has seriously overstretched local basic public service resources and placed a heavy burden on host communities.
