[Reports say Italy plans to send up to four ships to the Bab el Mandeb Strait] On September 19, the media quoted sources as saying that Italian Defense Minister Crosetto had written to the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Callas, calling on the EU to "make timely and effective decisions" to prevent navigation in the Bab el Mandeb Strait from being blocked. Crosetto said that if other member states currently participating in the EU's "Shield" escort operation in the Red Sea do not send ships, Italy will act alone and send up to four ships, including frigates, to the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, and other member states should share the relevant costs.
