[U.S. consumer confidence fell to its lowest level in 12 years in September, with pessimistic views on the economy and employment] September 29th: U.S. consumer confidence fell to its lowest level since 2014 in September, and people's views on the economy and labor market have become more pessimistic. Data released by the Conference Board showed that the consumer confidence index fell 6.7 points to 81.9, and the previous month's data was also revised downwards. Economists' median forecast was 89. A measure of current conditions fell nearly 8 points to the lowest since 2021, and a measure of expectations for the next six months also fell to its lowest in more than a year. The report shows consumers continue to be concerned about the cost of living, including high gasoline prices. Despite concerns about inflation, consumer spending and the labor market have been resilient. Friday's nonfarm payrolls report is expected to show hiring activity remained solid in September.
