[The Prosecutor's Office is closed and the Korean Public Prosecution Service and the Major Crime Investigation Agency are officially established] October 2, 2020. South Korea's prosecutorial system will usher in major reforms on October 2. The Public Prosecution Department and the Major Crime Investigation Department were formally established on the same day. The Procuratorate's Office, which had been in operation for 78 years, was officially closed. The long-term system of the Procuratorate having both investigation and prosecution powers became history. According to the revised Criminal Procedure Law, the Public Prosecution Office Law and the Major Crime Investigation Office Law, the Public Prosecution Office is mainly responsible for initiating and maintaining public prosecutions, and the Major Crime Investigation Office is responsible for the investigation of seven categories of major crimes. Most criminal cases are investigated by the police and the Office of Public Prosecutions no longer has investigative powers. Although the name "Prosecutor's Office" no longer exists, the titles "Prosecutor" and "General Prosecutor" remain.
