[The water level in the Budapest section of the Danube River reaches a record low] On October 2, the Budapest Water Department said on October 1, local time, that the water level in the Budapest section of the Danube River dropped to "minus 1 centimeter" that day, a record low. The water department said that the zero point of the water level scale corresponds to the lowest water level recorded during the dry season in 1834. Therefore, negative water levels do not mean that the Danube river bed is dry, but only that the current water level is lower than the lowest value in 1834. Budapest has been regularly monitoring the Danube since 1823, and before that, the water level had never fallen below the zero point of the scale. According to forecasts from the water affairs department, due to the ongoing drought, the water level in the Budapest section of the Danube River may drop to "minus 8 centimeters" by the end of this week.
