[The G20 Trade Ministers’ Meeting was held in Milwaukee, the United States] October 2, according to the official website of the Ministry of Commerce, the G20 Trade Ministers’ Meeting was held in Milwaukee, the United States, from September 30 to October 1. Trade ministers or representatives of G20 members and guest countries (Poland) attended the meeting. All parties exchanged views on issues set by the United States such as opposing the weaponization of food, dealing with overcapacity, eliminating forced labor, and adjusting the principle of most-favored-nation treatment. The meeting reached a joint statement on food issues, but did not form outcome documents on other issues. Li Chenggang, International Trade Negotiator of the People's Republic of China (at the ministerial level) and Vice Minister of Commerce, attended the meeting and delivered a speech.
Li Chenggang said that President Xi Jinping profoundly pointed out that the G20 should uphold the concept of a community with a shared future for mankind, build international consensus in the fields of economy, trade and other fields, and improve global governance. Faced with the continued impact of unilateralism, China calls on G20 members to practice multilateralism, support the multilateral trading system with the WTO at its core, jointly safeguard and strengthen the cornerstone of the most-favored-nation principle, and inject stability and predictability into global trade. The G20 should maintain an open order through collective action, narrow the global gap through sustainable development, and release growth momentum through digital and intelligent cooperation.
Li Chenggang pointed out that food security is related to human survival and national and social stability. China has made positive contributions to global food security. G20 members should actively reduce trade barriers and jointly maintain the stability and smoothness of the food production and supply chain. China has always adhered to the people-centered development philosophy, attached great importance to the protection of workers' rights and interests, and called on all parties to tap into trade potential, create more high-quality jobs, and ensure that the fruits of growth are shared by all. Regarding the issue of production capacity, a comprehensive and objective dynamic analysis should be carried out from a global perspective, and more cooperation should be discussed instead of creating confrontation. China is willing to actively carry out industrial policy dialogue and cooperation with all parties, enhance mutual trust through strengthening policy coordination, and jointly promote the healthy and sustainable development of global industries. China firmly opposes unilateralism and protectionism on the grounds of dealing with overcapacity and eliminating forced labor.
During the meeting, Li Chenggang also held bilateral meetings or brief talks with heads of delegations from the United States, the European Union, Saudi Arabia, Russia, Brazil, Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Australia, South Korea, and Poland.
