[Confirmed cases of Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of the Congo rise to 8,665] On October 8, the latest data from the Ministry of Health of the Democratic Republic of the Congo showed that so far, the country has reported a total of 8,665 confirmed cases of this Ebola epidemic, including 4,178 deaths, and a case fatality rate of 48.2%. Currently, 2,259 patients have recovered and been discharged from hospital, while 890 patients are still hospitalized or in isolation. The Democratic Republic of the Congo declared an Ebola outbreak on May 15. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated on August 12 that the current epidemic in the Democratic Republic of the Congo "is already the second largest Ebola epidemic on record."
