[German Chancellor Mertz met with British Prime Minister Burnham and the friendship treaty between the two countries officially came into effect] On October 8, local time, German Chancellor Mertz met with visiting British Prime Minister Burnham at the Federal Chancellery in Berlin. This is Burnham's first official visit to Germany since taking office as British Prime Minister. The two sides held talks on bilateral relations as well as foreign, European and economic policy issues, with a focus on security cooperation, economic development and common challenges currently facing Europe. An important agenda item of the day's visit was the formal exchange of letters of ratification of the Anglo-German Treaty of Friendship between the two countries. This treaty was called the "Treaty of Kensington" after it was signed in July 2025 at the Victoria and Albert Museum in Kensington, London, England. The German federal government stated that with the exchange of letters of ratification, the treaty officially came into effect, which also means that Anglo-German relations have entered a new stage of cooperation.
