[Violent clashes in South Sudan killed more than 70 people] On October 10, South Sudan’s Ministry of Information, Communications Technology and Postal Services issued a statement saying that violent clashes occurred in Rumbek Town, Lakes State early that morning, and about 71 people were killed. The number of casualties has not yet been determined. Among the victims were four soldiers. The statement stated that the local government has deployed joint security forces composed of the South Sudan People's Defense Forces, the National Security Agency and the South Sudan National Police, and the situation is currently under control. The Government of South Sudan strongly condemns the violence and urges all communities in Lakes State to exercise calm and restraint and avoid retaliatory actions that may further escalate tensions.
