[U.S. household debt problem sounds alarm, nearly 20% of loans are overdue] October 10th, a report released by the Federal Reserve on Friday local time showed that in the past three years (between 2022 and 2025), the ability of U.S. residents to repay their debts on time has continued to deteriorate, with relevant indicators falling to the worst levels since shortly after the global financial crisis. The latest Federal Reserve survey shows that as of the end of 2025, the proportion of households with overdue loan repayments has increased from about 12% in the previous round of surveys to nearly 20%, an increase of approximately 67%. The proportion of households with overdue payments of two months or more has also increased significantly, from 5% in 2022 to more than 8%. The report also noted that income growth was particularly significant among households aged 75 and over, while income among households aged 35 to 44 fell by 25%. The Fed attributed the decline to lower capital gains income among households in that age group.
