[The United States relaxes federal registration requirements for silencers and some firearms] On October 10, the U.S. Department of Justice announced that it would no longer enforce federal registration requirements for firearm silencers, short-barreled rifles, short-barreled shotguns and some other firearms nationwide. Previously, a federal judge in Texas ruled in August that the relevant registration licensing process was unconstitutional. It is reported that previously purchasing the above-mentioned equipment usually required filling out an application form, entering fingerprints and waiting for federal government approval. The U.S. Congress and President Trump had previously canceled the $200 registration license tax on related equipment. Texas Federal District Court Judge James Hendricks subsequently determined that the relevant registration regulations should be invalid; the U.S. Department of Justice decided not to appeal the ruling. Under the new rules, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives will no longer require buyers to register, except for about 15 states that still require compliance with the federal licensing process through state laws. However, machine guns and what federal law calls "destructive devices" still need to be registered; all gun buyers must still fill out a standard gun purchase form and pass a background check.
