[BHP Billiton negotiates with unions to avert a strike at the world's largest copper mine in Chile] On October 14, the union representing more than 1,000 workers at Chile's Escondida coal mine said that they are negotiating wages with operator BHP Billiton Group in a last-ditch effort to avoid a strike at the world's largest copper mine. A last-minute deal that averts a strike by about a quarter of the mine's direct employees would help ease supply tensions in an industry already struggling to keep up with rising demand driven by investment in data centers and power grids.
