[IMF President: U.S. economic growth is not enough to reduce debt] On October 14th, International Monetary Fund President Georgieva said on the 14th that the United States cannot rely on economic growth alone to resolve rising public debt and needs to take other fiscal adjustment measures. Georgieva said during the 2026 Autumn Annual Meeting of the IMF and World Bank Group held in Bangkok, Thailand, that U.S. Treasury Secretary Bessent admitted that the U.S. deficit and overall debt are too high. Georgieva said U.S. authorities rely heavily on economic growth to help reduce debt. The IMF believes that economic growth cannot bring about the necessary adjustments fast enough, so some fiscal measures are necessary. Currently, the total U.S. federal government debt exceeds $40 trillion. The U.S. government’s interest payments this fiscal year are expected to be close to $1.2 trillion. The scale of debt continues to expand, and high interest rates push up debt service costs. The U.S. finance is facing increasingly heavy interest pressure. (CCTV News)
