[Harvard University Professor Rogoff warns that U.S. fiscal difficulties may require a crisis to drive reforms] August 29th, Harvard University economics professor Kenneth Rogoff warned that the U.S. government’s worsening financial difficulties may not be resolved until a major crisis hits voters and prompts them to demand reforms. Rogoff said U.S. debt has continued to accumulate unchecked for years because of an "almost religious" belief among academic economists that interest rates will fall indefinitely. But he said political leaders have yet to adjust policy even as interest rates rebound from lows and continue to rise. "Interest rates have reversed, but the United States has not yet," the former chief economist of the International Monetary Fund said on the sidelines of an economic policy symposium in Jackson Hole. =
