[OpenAI also disclosed that the agent "crossed the line" and used other people's test coins without authorization during training] On October 16th, OpenAI issued a statement on Thursday local time saying that an AI agent used funds in other people's encrypted wallets without authorization while performing a training task. According to the report, the agent was ordered to modify a cryptocurrency trading application and deploy smart contracts on Sepolia. Completing the task requires paying blockchain transaction fees, but it does not receive any wallet holding the funds. The agent first tried to find a service that issued test coins for free. When this path failed, it wrote its own program, used public mnemonics widely circulated in the development field to generate wallet addresses in batches, and checked the balances one by one.
