[WHO: Saudi Arabia reports 8 cases of Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus] October 17th, the World Health Organization stated on the 16th that between January 1 and October 5, 2026, Saudi Arabia reported 8 laboratory-confirmed cases of Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus infection, including 1 death. The WHO stated that 8 cases were distributed in 6 locations, and no epidemiological link was found between all cases. Two cases reported direct contact with camels, while 6 cases reported no known contact history with camels. These cases appear to represent sporadic infections associated with zoonotic spillover rather than a single outbreak cluster. Saudi health authorities have conducted contact tracing of all confirmed cases; so far, no secondary cases have been found.
