[Australian data center operator Nextdc’s share price plummets, Melbourne project delayed due to community opposition] On October 21, data center operator Nextdc Ltd.’s stock price plummeted after the company said that due to community opposition, one of its major projects in Melbourne was delayed, and the company was considering force majeure options and lowered its profit forecast. The Australian company said in a statement on Wednesday that it was lowering its earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization forecast for the current fiscal year to June 2027 to A$245 million ($172 million) to A$265 million, from its previous forecast of A$385 million to A$410 million. When the stock market opened at 10 a.m. Sydney time on Wednesday, the stock fell as much as 44%. According to the statement, the profit forecast was lowered due to the suspension of power connection work by power supplier Jemena Electricity Networks due to opposition from local communities and relevant stakeholders to Nextdc's M3 data center project in Melbourne. The company is also reviewing capital spending plans and has suspended all new development projects and land acquisitions. Nextdc said in its filing that "the company is considering whether it may obtain assistance under the force majeure clause and other relevant provisions in these contracts."
