[Meta was ordered to pay a US$25 billion fine due to privacy and content moderation issues] On October 22, the New Mexico Court of the United States ordered Meta Platforms to pay a civil penalty of US$25 billion. The jury found that Meta violated state consumer protection laws more than 43 million times by making misleading statements related to user privacy, data processing and hate speech moderation. The New Mexico attorney general accused Meta of making false statements about user data protection and misleading the public about its content moderation and hate speech policies following the Cambridge Analytica data breach. The verdict was one of the largest fines in U.S. judicial history.
