[Wang Yi spoke on the phone with Philippine Foreign Minister Lazaro] On November 3, Wang Yi, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister, had a telephone conversation with Philippine Foreign Minister Lazaro on the 3rd. Wang Yi said that China-Philippines relations are currently facing malicious interference. A few politicians in the Philippines have repeatedly attacked and discredited China out of political bias and selfish interests, trampled on China's red lines, politicized normal economic, trade and people-to-people exchanges, and violated the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese personnel and institutions in the Philippines. This kind of evil behavior is irrational and intolerable, and it also damages the Philippines' international image. The Philippines should strengthen restraint on relevant personnel and make a rational and unified voice on its China policy. China is unswervingly determined to safeguard sovereignty and territorial integrity and achieve national reunification. The Philippines should implement the one-China policy and be cautious in its words and deeds on maritime-related issues.
Lazaro said that the Philippines attaches great importance to its relations with China and hopes to develop stable and predictable bilateral relations. Currently, countries are facing challenges in the economy, energy and other fields. Communication between the Philippines and China is conducive to managing differences, improving bilateral relations, and promoting regional peace and stability. The Philippines insists on pursuing the one-China policy and this position will not change. The Philippines is also willing to properly handle maritime-related issues with China through dialogue and consultation. As the rotating chair of ASEAN, the Philippines appreciates and looks forward to China playing a greater role in promoting the ASEAN-China comprehensive strategic partnership to achieve more results.
The two sides reached a basic consensus on improving and developing China-Philippines relations: First, healthy and stable China-Philippines relations are in the interests of both sides and in line with regional expectations. The two sides agreed to maintain diplomatic dialogue on this issue. The second is to strive to eliminate various internal and external interference factors and oppose any malicious provocation and behavior that undermines the diplomatic efforts of both sides. Third, both sides should manage differences responsibly, stabilize the situation, and seek to expand bilateral common interests.
The two sides also exchanged views on the upcoming East Asia Cooperation Leaders' Meeting in the Philippines and the subsequent APEC Leaders' Informal Meeting in Shenzhen, China. (Xinhua News Agency)
