[The Netherlands will transfer 86 tons of gold reserves from the United States and Canada to London for quick use in times of crisis] On September 2, the Dutch central bank has transferred approximately US$12 billion worth of gold reserves from New York and Ottawa to London, saying that the reason for the move was concerns about increasing global geopolitical instability. Between March and August this year, the Dutch central bank transferred approximately 86 tons of gold to London, accounting for more than a quarter of its gold reserves originally stored in the United States and Canada. London currently holds nearly one-third of the Netherlands' gold reserves, making it the largest storage location. Olaf Sleijpen, governor of the Dutch central bank, said in a statement on Wednesday: "With this transfer, we have increased the tradability of our gold reserves. We do not expect to ever need to draw on these reserves, but we do need to increase our resilience and preparedness." London has the most liquid gold market in the world, with hundreds of billions of dollars worth of gold changing hands every week. Because of this, central banks have long used the Bank of England as a gold custodian, where gold can be bought and sold quickly and on a large scale, and where gold can be lent to raise dollars.
