The report showed that the platinum market posted a consecutive quarterly surplus of 8 tons in the second quarter. Total supply was basically the same year-on-year at 59 tons (+1%); total demand fell 16% year-on-year (-10 tons) to 52 tons. Platinum ETF outflows were 7 tons, resulting in a net investment reduction of 4 tons. Looking ahead to the full year, the platinum market is expected to post a surplus of 8 tonnes, which will partially offset a first-half surplus of 17 tonnes as ETF outflows reverse. Thanks to increased recycling, total platinum supply is expected to increase by 2% year-on-year (+4 tonnes) to 229 tonnes. Total demand is expected to fall by 18% year-on-year (-49 tons) to 220 tons, mainly due to a significant decrease in investment demand compared with the previous year.
