[Argentina plans to start construction of a naval base in the southern part of the Malvinas Islands] On September 13, Argentina’s Defense Minister Carlos Presti stated that it plans to establish a naval military base in Ushuaia, the country’s southernmost city near the Malvinas Islands, in January next year. Presti said that the military base will start construction on January 2 after public bidding. The base belongs to the Argentine Navy and is equipped with submarines, marines and naval aviation. It will serve as a "logistics hub" connecting Argentina's seven permanent bases and six temporary bases in the Antarctic. It has "strategic value" for Argentina's "positioning and projection of influence" in the South Atlantic region.
