[People's Bank of China Shanghai Headquarters: As of the end of August, foreign institutions held 3.19 trillion yuan in inter-bank market bonds] On September 16, the Shanghai Headquarters of the People's Bank of China released a briefing on foreign institutions' investment in the inter-bank bond market in August 2026. As of the end of August 2026, foreign institutions held 3.19 trillion yuan of bonds in the interbank market, accounting for approximately 1.7% of the total custody volume of the interbank bond market. In terms of types of bonds, overseas institutions held 2.03 trillion yuan in government bonds, accounting for 63.6%, 0.76 trillion yuan in policy financial bonds, accounting for 23.8%, 0.26 trillion yuan in interbank certificates of deposit, accounting for 8.2%, and 0.14 trillion yuan in other types of bonds, accounting for 4.4%. In August, three new foreign institutional entities entered the inter-bank bond market. As of the end of August, a total of 1,204 overseas institutional entities had entered the market, of which 639 entered the market through settlement agency channels, 844 entered the market through the "Bond Connect" channel, and 279 entered the market through both channels at the same time. In August, the spot trading volume of foreign institutions in the inter-bank bond market was approximately 1.39 trillion yuan, and the average daily trading volume was approximately 66.1 billion yuan.
