[U.S. mortgage interest rates rose to 6.97%, a new high in more than a year] September 16th, data released by the Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA) on Wednesday showed that the 30-year mortgage contract interest rate increased 12 basis points to 6.97% in the week ending September 11th, the highest since May 2025. Rising borrowing costs have dampened demand for loans. The MBA home purchase index - a measure of loan applications - edged down 0.8% from the previous week; the refinancing index fell 8.8% to its lowest level since May 2025.
