[New design can help improve quantum sensor performance] On November 2, researchers from the University of Adelaide in Australia proposed a new design for superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) that can help improve the performance of quantum sensing systems composed of such devices. The research paper was recently published in the American journal Physical Review Applications. SQUID is composed of a "Josephson junction" and a superconductor closed loop, and is the core device of many modern quantum sensing systems. The "Josephson junction" is a "sandwich" structure composed of two layers of superconductors sandwiched by an extremely thin insulating layer. The research team said that the new design may be used in areas such as brain monitoring, radio frequency reception and electromagnetic sensing in the future. It is also expected to simplify the device manufacturing process and reduce costs, but further testing is still needed before commercial application.
