Rockstar parent company Take-Two applied to the court for a subpoena against Microsoft and Discord on August 20, requiring them to provide user data related to the recent "GTA6" leak incident. A federal court granted the request the next day, but some users expressed concern that the data request was too broad. Discord recently responded to this, stating that it has not received Take-Two's subpoena and will evaluate its legality and scope before responding.

The subpoena request submitted by Take-Two covers thousands of users and requires the provision of "registered IP address, last login IP address, phone number, associated account (Google/Xbox, etc.)" and related data. Court documents show that Microsoft and Discord have been given until September 4 to respond.

Microsoft has expressed its willingness to cooperate. Xbox CTO Scott Van Vliet said on social platforms last week: "We are working closely with Take-Two and Rockstar Games to support efforts to protect creative works and intellectual property." Given that "GTA6" will be one of the most important works on the Xbox Series X/S platform, Microsoft has sufficient business interests to maintain its cooperative relationship with Take-Two.

In contrast, Discord, as a communication platform, should protect the privacy of user data. Its marketing director Ryan Rigney posted on the social platform on August 24: "I can share the latest development: Discord has not yet received a subpoena from Take-Two. Once received, we will evaluate its legality and scope before responding." This statement was in response to a post that sparked widespread concerns that Take-Two was targeting far beyond the users associated with the source of the original data leak.

Due to its popularity among players, Discord has become a gathering place for the spread of leaked content, and has therefore become a frequent target of subpoena requests from game companies.

It is unclear whether Take-Two is acting based on solid clues or trying to find any available clues in the new wave of "GTA6" leaks on the Internet.
