Google recently officially adjusted the release rhythm of the Chrome browser, shortening the version update from once every four weeks to once every two weeks. With Chrome version 153 released for desktop, iOS and Android platforms on September 8, this new strategy officially began to be implemented.

Google stated that the increase in update frequency is closely related to the changing network security environment in the era of artificial intelligence. The number of browser security patches and updates has continued to increase in recent years, driven by automated artificial intelligence tools and vulnerability reports submitted by security researchers and the community. Shorter release cycles help Google manage these security fixes more efficiently and push patches to users as quickly as possible.

Google is particularly concerned about new security threats that artificial intelligence may bring. As attackers use AI tools to discover vulnerabilities and develop attack methods more quickly, the window of time between when a software vulnerability is fixed and enters the public code base and when the final patch reaches ordinary user devices has become more critical. One of the purposes of Chrome shortening the update cycle is to compress this time difference as much as possible.

In the field of network security, this period of time is often called the "N-day patch window", which refers to the interval between a security vulnerability being discovered or made public and the time when users actually install the repair patch. Google believes that shortening the version release cycle can reduce the time that vulnerabilities remain unfixed after they are disclosed, thereby reducing the opportunity for attackers to launch attacks by exploiting known vulnerabilities.

A faster update rhythm not only serves security fixes, but also helps Chrome roll out new features more quickly. Artificial intelligence-assisted software development is spawning a large number of new browser competitors, and the competitive pressure faced by traditional browser manufacturers has increased significantly. In 2021, Google shortened Chrome's update cycle from six weeks to four weeks in order to manage patches and launch new features faster. Prior to this, Google had long adhered to the development philosophy of "release early and release frequently". Today, as AI technology simultaneously changes vulnerability discovery, network attacks, and software development methods, Chrome has once again accelerated its update speed, which also means that browser manufacturers are entering a more frequent security maintenance and feature iteration stage.
