Apple is studying to improve the Safari layout of iPhone Duo's external screen, but no plan has been determined yet

Abstract:

Apple is studying how to improve the way Safari web pages are displayed on the iPhone Duo's external screen. Since the external screen of the mobile phone is wider and shorter, Safari places the browser control buttons on the right side of the screen. Currently, web pages can only be displayed next to the buttons, and the remaining area is filled with the background color of the web page, so the horizontal space available for text is compressed.

Jen Simmons, an engineer on Apple's WebKit team, said in the Safari 27.1 developer notes that web pages can be expanded below the control buttons through viewport-fit="cover", but Apple found that many websites did not correctly avoid system controls on the four sides of the screen, and directly opening the entire area may block web content. The team is studying more prudent methods, such as extending the title bar background of the web page to the full screen, while leaving the navigation buttons in a position where they will not be blocked; it has not yet been announced when or whether such adjustments will be rolled out.

Safari 27.1 has added some adaptation features for folding screens: when users fold iPhone Duo in half and browse web PDFs like opening a book, the browser will automatically display two pages side by side; after fully unfolding or closing the screen, it will resume single-page display. Developers can also use experimental features to detect the folded state of the device and arrange web content on both sides of the screen seam.

These folding posture and viewport partitioning functions are still a developer preview and need to be manually turned on in the function flag of Safari's advanced settings. WebKit said that Safari 27.1 continues to use the same WebKit engine and web technology as other iPhones, and web page adaptation should still give priority to responsive design.
