U.S. President Donald Trump has communicated with Apple about changing the name of "Lake Ontario" to "American Lake," U.S. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum said on Monday, and Apple may soon make the change in its mapping service.
Trump announced last Thursday that Lake Ontario, the smallest of the five Great Lakes, will be renamed "American Lake." The move comes amid an escalating trade dispute between the United States and Canada, which has seen the two countries impose tariffs on billions of dollars of each other's goods.
Burgum said in an interview on Fox Business Channel's "Mornings with Maria": "The president contacted Apple directly, so I believe that we may soon see Lake Ontario be renamed American Lake."
Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The name-changing executive order signed by Trump only applies to the U.S. Geographic Names Information System. This system is responsible for establishing the standard for place names used on official maps of the United States. The executive order will not affect what Canada calls the lake, nor will it change what the rest of the world calls it.
Google stated that Google Maps has now marked the lake as an "American Lake" for American users.
