Abstract:
In response to the Trump administration's renaming of Lake Ontario to "American Lake", Canadian Prime Minister Carney said on the 27th that the name of Lake Ontario carries a long historical origin, and Canadians will always use this name no matter how the external environment changes.
Carney posted on social media that day that Lake Ontario originally meant "beautiful and vast lake". This name has a history of more than 400 years, long before the establishment of Canada's federation and the signing of the United States' Declaration of Independence.
Carney said that Canada has noticed that the United States is changing, including changes in its trade relations, foreign policy, national monuments and its hydrological geographical names. Canadians understand that the lake is called Lake Ontario, "today and forever."
Earlier on the 27th, U.S. President Trump signed an executive order to rename Lake Ontario "American Lake" and said the order "effective immediately." He wrote on social media on the 25th: "The United States is seriously considering changing the name of Lake Ontario to 'American Lake' because we do not expect to have much business dealings with Ontario (Canada) in the future." This statement triggered dissatisfaction and criticism from Canada.
Lake Ontario is one of the five Great Lakes in North America. It is located at the junction of the United States and Canada. The lake area borders Ontario, Canada, to the north, and New York State, United States, to the south.
