Toshio Suzuki, chairman and producer of Studio Ghibli, recently talked about generative AI. He believes that although AI can easily imitate specific animation styles, it cannot truly replicate Hayao Miyazaki's artistic expression, so the so-called "Ghibli-style" AI images are of little significance to the studio.
In 2025, "Ghibli-style" AI images once attracted attention. Suzuki Toshio said that he received a large number of interview invitations at the time, but declined them all because he judged that the craze would soon subside. Although Ghibli officials have never responded publicly, the related popularity has declined rapidly since then.
Suzuki Toshio pointed out that with a little common sense, people can see the differences between AI imitations and real Ghibli animations. In his opinion, such imitations do not make much sense to Ghibli, nor are they interesting.
When talking about the way AI is generated, he compared its process of finding the "best answer" from a large amount of network information with Hayao Miyazaki's creative method. Toshio Suzuki revealed that since Hayao Miyazaki completed "What Kind of Life Do You Want to Live" in 2023, he has been working on his next work in retreat, and may not even know what generative AI is.
As for Ghibli’s positioning in the AI era, Suzuki Toshio said in a sarcastic tone that as long as “Ghibli will be sublimated into a cultural entity and show the meaning of human creative art” input into AI, you will naturally get a set of beautiful answers. However, he also emphasized that Miyazaki's artistic expression cannot be truly replicated by AI or computer animation.
