Abstract:
Rockstar confirmed that "GTA 6" will not include microtransactions or generative artificial intelligence features, but the upgraded "GTA Online" is likely to present a different situation.
According to GameSpot, Kinda Funny hosts Andy Cortez and Greg Miller asked Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson about whether generative AI and microtransactions will appear in the upcoming game. Faced with this direct question, Nielsen gave a clear negative answer to both.
With the enterprise and consumer markets gradually embracing generative artificial intelligence, it is particularly striking that a major game has made it clear that it will not use this technology. Epic Games is currently promoting the integration of artificial intelligence into the Unreal Engine development ecosystem, while Valve requires artificial intelligence-assisted games on the Steam platform to clearly label relevant situations and not infringe on existing copyrights.
As for microtransactions, the situation is relatively clear. Players may be able to accept microtransactions in free-to-play games like Fortnite, but in higher-priced premium games, microtransactions are often met with backlash. So it's no surprise that GTA 6 doesn't include microtransactions, especially considering the game is expected to cost $80.
However, there is an important difference that needs to be noted as to whether microtransactions will appear in "GTA 6": Although the stand-alone main story will not include microtransactions, the new version of "GTA Online" that has not been officially announced but will almost certainly be launched is likely to use them as an important part.
The current "GTA Online" is based on "GTA 5" and is still an important source of revenue for Rockstar parent company Take-Two Interactive. It is foreseeable that the publisher also hopes to continue this trend through the online mode of "GTA 6". Therefore, once the new version of "GTA Online" is released, players should not be surprised to see microtransactions appear again in it.
