GTA6's car-stealing mechanism welcomes the biggest innovation in 25 years, with an overall increase in operational difficulty

Abstract:

"Grand Theft Auto 6" has made a number of major adjustments to the classic gameplay framework of the series: escaping police pursuit is more challenging, the combat experience is more exciting, and the narrative style is more mature and profound. But perhaps the most core change is that this series, which is named after the crime of car theft and has gone through nearly 30 years, has made hijacking vehicles full of skill and fun for the first time.

Yesterday, a new trailer for GTA6 was released on Netflix, and many game media and content creators also released preview content at the same time - they experienced the game in advance last month and started communicating with the Rockstar team. Almost all forward-looking reports mentioned that Rockstar invested a lot of time and energy to deeply expand and iterate the car stealing gameplay. In previous GTA works, players only need to walk to a parked vehicle and press a button to get in. At most, they can add an animation of smashing the window and unlocking the door. The whole process is very simple. But in GTA6, stealing a car is far from easy.

GTA6's car stealing mechanism welcomes the biggest innovation in 25 years and the difficulty of operation is comprehensively improved

Rockstar North development director Rob Nelson said in an interview with IGN: "We have added a layered unlocking mechanism to the vehicle."

"In the past, players could press the triangle button to directly set up a line and ignite it, steal any car they wanted to steal, and drive away directly. We believe that this design wastes a lot of gameplay potential and does not leave room for players to grow and make decisions. Therefore, in the new game, when the game first starts, some parked vehicles are inaccessible. You must advance the plot to a certain stage and obtain the corresponding tools to unlock them."

Nelson also mentioned this in an interview with GTA YouTube blogger The Gaming Gorilla. He explained that stealing different types of vehicles requires different tools. For example, as shown in the live trailer on Thursday, Jason and Lucia can use the "Slim Jim" lock strip to pick the lock and steal the car, but this trick only works on older models. Even if you smash the window of a newer vehicle and get in, you may not be able to get the wiring started and drive away.

"Tip ignition itself requires no additional tools," Nelson told TGG, "but not all vehicles can be started by a key duplicator. Some models require a key duplicator to start. You can smash the window and get in the car, but without a key duplicator it will not start."

Of course, this is GTA after all, and Nelson also made it clear that even in the early stages of the game, players can rush up to a luxury car while it is waiting at a red light at an intersection, pull the driver out and drive away without the need for a key duplicator or any tools. However, such vehicles are likely to have built-in locators, which the police can use to track your location. You still have to deal with this hidden danger. Moreover, the stolen car will not be directly owned by you permanently. You need to register the vehicle and then park it in a garage with limited capacity before it can become a personal vehicle that can be called at any time; otherwise, the vehicle will disappear after restarting the game.

In another forward-looking report released by IGN, Nelson also introduced that players can use an application called Waink on their mobile phones to scan vehicles to obtain detailed information.

"For example, Waink will tell me that the car is locked, has an alarm system, and does not have a locator installed," Nelson explained during a demonstration of the game for IGN. "It will also show me how much I can sell the car for if I take it to a paint shop or a specialized dealer. Money, and how much it costs to license this car. For example, this car requires a key duplicator, and that car only needs a lock strip. We have added a lot of interesting gadgets and mechanisms to make this simple black and white operation more profound."

Nelson added: "I think this makes each car more present, and players need to be more careful and strategic when stealing cars."

I completely agree with this. The "Grand Theft Auto" series is obviously named after car stealing as its core selling point, but it has never made the process of stealing cars interesting, exciting, and challenging. This has always been a strange thing. As Nelson said, stealing a car used to be a "binary operation": press a button, play an animation, and you have the car. But in GTA6, stealing a car has become something that requires planning and testing skills. Maybe shabby old cars are still easy to steal, but high-end vehicles require more steps. And the sense of accomplishment of successfully stealing a top-level supercar will be much stronger than any previous work in the series.
