Abstract:
Faced with the potential competition brought by OpenAI’s self-developed inference chip Jalapeño, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang responded at the company’s second quarter earnings call for fiscal year 2027. He said that what Nvidia is building is "very different" from OpenAI's self-developed chips.
"We are building something completely different." Huang Renxun said that Nvidia does not just provide a single chip, but a platform covering the complete AI life cycle.
“NVIDIA is a platform, a complete AI factory platform, covering the entire AI life cycle, and you can use it in any cloud.” Huang Renxun said.
Huang Renxun’s statement was made in the context of OpenAI’s promotion of self-developed AI chips. According to his statement on the call, he did not show any obvious concern about Jalapeño, but pointed to the difference between Nvidia and OpenAI’s self-developed chips in product positioning:
The former emphasizes platform capabilities covering the AI life cycle, rather than competition between single chips.
In the same conference call, Huang Renxun also talked about the competition between open models and proprietary AI models. He said that he does not believe that the open model will pose a significant risk to the proprietary model.
"Both the open model and the closed source model will be successful, and they are driving our sales growth at the same time."
Huang Renxun also believes that AI is moving from tools that require humans to issue instructions to perform tasks, to intelligent agents that can continue to run in the background. He still believes that this change will bring huge business opportunities to Nvidia.
