iOS 27.2 may allow users to turn off specific AI suggestions in messages and automatically hide features that have not been used for a long time

Abstract:

iOS 27.2, which Apple is testing, is expected to bring a refined control feature for the "Messages" app, allowing users to individually turn off certain "suggested actions" generated by Apple Intelligence. This change will allow users to more precisely decide which suggestions should appear in the conversation interface, compared with the previous acceptance of such AI features as a whole.

"Message Suggested Actions" originally appeared in the iOS 27 beta, but Apple temporarily removed this feature when it officially released iOS 27, saying it needed more time for testing. With the launch of the iOS 27.2 beta, this feature has returned, and Apple has further added independent control options for different suggestion types.

The main function of this feature is to use Apple Intelligence to understand the ongoing conversation of the user and automatically provide actions that can be performed with one click based on the context. For example, when the other party asks the user to send a photo in a message, the system can directly display suggestions for adding related photos; if the other party invites the user to participate in an event, the system can suggest adding the event to the "Calendar"; if the conversation involves things that need to be purchased or completed, the system can also suggest adding the content to "Reminders" or "Memos".

Apple has made this type of AI capability one of the important functions of the “Messages” application in iOS 27. However, for some users, the suggestion buttons that appear automatically may not always be useful, and may even interfere with the normal messaging interface. So, iOS 27.2 seems to be offering more granular controls.

According to the relevant code in the third beta version of iOS 27.2, Apple has added a new settings page dedicated to managing "recommended actions". Options found so far include different types such as "Add to Calendar," "Add to Reminders," "Add to Notes," "Show in Maps," and "Flights and Packages."

This means that in the future, users can decide on a case-by-case basis whether to allow these suggestions to appear in the Messages app based on their own usage habits. For example, if a user never creates a calendar event from a message, they can simply turn off Add to Calendar and keep other types of suggestions.

iOS 27.2 may also offer an option called "Hide unused suggestions." After enabling it, if a certain suggestion is not used by users for 30 consecutive days, the system will automatically stop displaying this suggestion.

This mechanism is actually similar to an "adaptive cleaning". Users do not need to study all settings one by one, they only need to use the information application normally, and the system will gradually reduce suggestions that have not been adopted for a long time based on actual usage, thereby avoiding a large number of AI operation buttons in the interface that users do not need.

If a suggestion later becomes useful again, the user can also turn the corresponding independent switch back on. The relevant test code shows that closing and reopening a suggestion can restore its display in the information application.

From the overall design, Apple obviously hopes to find a balance between AI automation and user control. Apple Intelligence can proactively determine what the user may need based on the conversation content, but Apple does not completely let AI decide which operations should appear in the interface, but further provides more fine-grained manual control.

This is also an obvious trend after Apple Intelligence in iOS 27 gradually penetrates into the system. Unlike chatbots that simply answer questions, Apple's AI increasingly assumes the role of "understanding context and performing actions directly." System applications such as messaging, email, and phone calls have begun to use the content the user is processing to proactively provide next steps.

At present, iOS 27.2 is still in the testing stage, and whether the above settings will eventually appear in exactly the same form in the official version is still subject to change. However, Apple has confirmed that “information suggestions” belong to the Apple Intelligence feature in the iOS 27 series, and is gradually improving the related experience.

In addition to the suggested actions in the Messages app, iOS 27.2 also includes a redesigned Health app, a new Siri AI language, and other functional adjustments. Apple has previously announced that Siri AI will add support for French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish in iOS 27.2.

At present, Apple has released the beta version of iOS 27.2, and the release schedule of this update is quite special. Apple did not launch the iOS 27.1 beta first, but began testing iOS 27.2 directly. Since the first foldable iPhone will be available on October 23 with iOS 27.1 pre-installed, Apple is expected to release iOS 27.1 for this new device first, while iOS 27.2 may be launched to a wider range of users later.

If the current design is ultimately maintained, although this change in iOS 27.2 is not a major new feature, it can significantly improve the daily use experience of Apple Intelligence. Rather than letting AI continuously push various seemingly intelligent operation suggestions to users, letting users decide which suggestions are truly valuable may be more in line with Apple's consistent emphasis on system controllability and simplicity.
