Abstract:

On October 19, Reuters quoted the British "Daily Telegraph" as reporting that Microsoft has withdrawn from a data center cooperation with the British cloud service provider Nscale and recently terminated the data center agreement in Loughton, Essex, England. Microsoft is one of Nscale's two largest customers.

The Daily Telegraph stated that the project has been delayed many times, and relevant officials from the British National Grid have informed Nscale that it is not expected to be able to power the data center until the 2030s. However, the newspaper did not explain the specific reasons why Microsoft withdrew from the project. Microsoft declined to comment to Reuters.

In response to Reuters, an Nscale spokesperson said that the company's relationship with Microsoft remains solid and the two parties maintain long-term cooperation. This power grid issue involving the entire London area will not affect other contracts.

“We remain committed to advancing the Lawton project and our business in the UK and are exploring alternative sources of power for the park, as well as other expansion locations in the UK,” the spokesperson said.

Nscale filed for an initial public offering (IPO) in the United States last month. According to its prospectus, Microsoft and Anthropic are expected to be the company's major customers.

Nscale has received investment from NVIDIA to provide computing power, power, data center and other infrastructure and software for AI model training and operation, competing with companies such as CoreWeave, Nebius, Crusoe and Lambda. According to Reuters, Nscale has grown rapidly since its establishment, expanding the total contract value from US$100 million to more than US$103 billion in just two and a half years.
