Abstract:
Since Sony announced in July 2026 that it would stop producing PS5 physical discs in 2028, a large number of players have continued to express their dissatisfaction on official social accounts and promotional content. Even though some games will still be released in physical versions, the comment section is still full of protests. Faced with nearly two years of opposition, Sony recently introduced a new policy that was interpreted by the outside world as a tough response to its fiercest critics.
Sony characterizes this new policy as an "anti-harassment policy" and lists behaviors that should be combated, including abusive language, threats, slander, intimidation, discrimination, sexual harassment, assault on employees and unauthorized access to office premises.
What is causing concern, however, is that the policy also lists "continuous, repetitive or long-term requests", "demands unrelated to products or services" and "requests directed at employees" as prohibited behaviors. The related blog post also notes that the list of prohibited conduct is not exhaustive.
This clause happens to cover the ways in which a large number of players who oppose the physical disk discontinuation plan express their demands. Sony stated that those who violate the policy may face limited or suspended customer service privileges, and may even cooperate with law enforcement agencies to take legal measures, including criminal prosecution.
Sony has yet to provide further explanations on the details of the new rules. It remains to be seen how they will be implemented and whether action will be taken against long-term critics.
At the same time, Sony recently argued in a California class-action lawsuit that consumers do not actually own the digital version of the game - and the digital version is the only purchase option for players after the physical disk is discontinued. This stance, coupled with the introduction of new regulations, is expected to further intensify the confrontational mood of the player community.
