Tesla’s self-driving online ride-hailing service has traveled 4.99 million kilometers and 0 people were hit

Abstract:

Tesla released its first safety report for driverless online ride-hailing. As of October 18, 2026, this Robotaxi fleet has traveled a total of 4.99 million kilometers and has a very impressive safety record.

During these 4.99 million kilometers, there were no injuries, vehicle airbags did not deploy once, and no pedestrians or cyclists were hit.

The report compared the accident data of the local police. If the same mileage were driven by a human driver, it is estimated that there would be 9 accidents involving injuries and 4 collisions requiring airbag deployment.

Looking at this set of comparative data alone, the safety performance of autonomous driving seems to be much better than that of human driving.

Previous official data showed that

Tesla FSD (supervised version) has traveled more than 10 billion miles and is 7 times safer than human drivers when enabled.

This set of driverless online ride-hailing vehicles is currently only operating in some cities in the United States, and the official has not disclosed the specific number of fleets. Tesla will continue to update safety reports on a quarterly basis to facilitate everyone to track its actual performance.

According to the plan, starting from the second quarter of 2027, ordinary car owners’ Tesla vehicles will also have the opportunity to join this online ride-hailing fleet.

However, this data cannot be directly understood as completely zero accidents. The report counts injuries and pedestrian collisions caused by Robotaxi itself. In reality, other cars may still hit the robotaxi, but the responsibility does not lie with the driverless vehicle.

Unmanned taxis have been anticipated by many people, and their safety has always been the topic of greatest concern. This report can be regarded as the first answer sheet.

We need to see more real performance in complex road conditions and bad weather in the future. Only through longer and larger tests can we truly judge whether this driverless online ride-hailing system is reliable or not.
